Sacramento, CA, United States (AHN) – California Governor Jerry Brown (D) vetoed on Thursday the state budget approved on Wednesday by Democratic state legislators.
Brown explained that he vetoed the budget because it was not a balanced solution to California’s $26-billion budget deficit. The governor said the proposed budget document would continue the large budget gaps for years, create new debt, and has legally doubtful maneuvers, costly borrowings and unrealistic savings.
Brown called on Republican legislators to place on the ballot his proposal to extend personal income and sales tax increases.
The Democratic legislators rushed the budget on Wednesday to meet a deadline set by Proposition 25. Because of previous budget impasses, California residents required lawmakers last year to approve a balanced state budget by June 15 or forfeit their pay.
Following Brown’s veto, California Controller John Chiang said he would analyze the budget bill to determine if the legislators met the California voters’ requirement. Democratic leaders insisted they met the deadline even if the governor vetoed the budget.
California legislators have a $95.291 annual salary and daily $142 living and travel expenses.
